Toxic free 2014: Homemade DIY Laundry soap/detergent recipes

Welcome to 2014 & trying to remove more toxic items from your home.

Laundry products are some of the most toxic items you can buy, but did you know you can easily make your own effective, safe DIY laundry products?

Toxic Free 2014 posts

Many by regular bar soap such as Ivory or other soaps in the grocery store for DIY laundry soap, I must caution you that even Ivory is very toxic, make sure to buy only natural bar soaps if it is needed for the recipe you will be making. For bar soaps you can use Zote, Fels Naphtha, castile bars, homemade bars or other natural bars soaps of choice

As I have pointed out before when you wash with commercial toxic laundry products they get on your clothes then absorb into your skin & weaken your immune system as a result of the toxins. Go here for more info on commercial products vs DIY for a better immune system.

If DIY laundry soap is not for you check out my review of  The SmartKlean Laundry ball & Mollys Suds, & for Fabric softener ideas check out my original DIY laundry post here & check out my LooHoo wool dryer balls review.

Did you know you can make your own washing soda? For recipes that call for Washing soda you can cheaply make your own here , for info on DIY cleaners go hereherehere & here

For Hunters: the below recipes are great no scent ideas for hunters to use to wash their clothes in (just do not use essential oils or scented soaps). But a great easy recipe to use just for hunters is 3 parts baking soda, 3 parts borax, 3 parts washing soda to 1 part epsom salt, store in an airtight container & use 1 to 2 tbsp per load, adjust amount as needed.

Laundry soaps, detergents, powders & liquids

fels naptha soap

Shaved Fels Naptha soap

Laundry soap #1 (powdered)
2 cups Borax
2 cups Baking soda
2 cups Washing soda
1 bar grated or shaved bar soap from the above list
1 cup Epsom salt (optional, but works great to help soften to help stop fading & removes some stains)
Mix well, use 1 to 2 tbsp. per load, adjust up or down to your need

Laundry soap #2 (powdered)
4 bars of  grated or shaved bar soap from the above list
1 78 oz. box of Borax
6 cups. baking soda
8 cups Washing soda
2 tbsp. of lavender essential oil
2 tbsp of lemon essential oil

Mix together breaking up any clumps, store in airtight container, use 1 to 2 tbsp. per load. (if you do not want to add the bar soap leave it out & use 2 to 5 tbsp. per load.

Laundry soap #3 (powdered)
2 bars of grated or shaved Zote soap
2 bars of grated or shaved Fels Naphtha
6 cups baking soda
6 cups washing soda
1 cup Epsom salt

DIY liquid LandryMix together & use 1 to 2 tbsp. per load.

Laundry soap #4 (liquid)
3 Tablespoons Borax
3 Tablespoons Washing Soda
1 cup natural liquid soap (or Begleys liquid soap)
20 drops eucalyptus or lavender essential oil

Dissolve the borax & washing soda in 3 cups of warm water, then mix with soap in gallon jug  fill all the way with water. , might need to shake to mix before each use.  use 1/2 cup to 1 cup per load.

Another easy liquid laundry soap
1 cup of natural liquid soap (or Dawn dish soap, original) to 7 cups of water, use 1/4 cup per load (or more or less)

Fix it how you like it:

With DIY laundry soaps & detergents, powders can be made into liquids by adding to simmering water on the stove & stirring until dissolved, & adding more water to thin as needed (example recipe one would be 2 to 3 gallons of water total once made) Also amounts are subjective & can be different for each person depending on washer brand, HE machines & Brand, & types of water, so it may take a bit of trial & error to get the right amount for you & to not add to much.

Don’t use too much soap for washing clothes: To much soap actually cleans the clothes worse than to little does & too much gives clothes a dingy look as well. So start off with a very small amount of soap rather liquid or powder & build up to what works best. A great test to know if you are adding too much soap to your laundry loads is to add about 3 to 4 towels on a large load with the normal amount of soap you use for a large load. Let the washer run through all the cycles until done, then restart the washer on a small load with no soap, during the wash cycle when water is agitating check to see if any soap bubbles are forming, if they are you are using too much soap. Towels are great for this test because they are absorbent.

Yes we love DIY & we love natural & Molly’s suds fits into both perfectly in our family.

I contacted Molly’s suds because so many of my fans were telling me how much they loved their products & how their ingredients were so similar to the products & ingredients I recommended to my fans in DIY recipes. I had never used any Molly’s Suds products but was intrigued & then I totally felt why this family was created & I wanted to help spread the word about such a great company all after reading their store (Our Story) & reading about each product & the testimonials.

So for my fans who do not like or do not want to make their own DIY laundry products this is another great option for you.

So it is review time.

Molly’s suds has great customer service & great fast shipping. No complaints at all.

This review has given Molly’s suds a place in my heart & so out of our tax return every year IMollys suds 3 hope to support their company as much as I can & I also hope to support their company as much as I can sharing this with my fans & sharing on my various social media sites.

As a matter of fact the only warning I could find to give you about this great laundry powder is that if you like mint this laundry powder can be addicting & cause you to want to stand in the laundry room & smell it.  I do love mint, & yes I had read the ingredients but when the box arrived at my home & I immediately opened the package I realized I had had no idea about the amazingly yummy scent. It is a good thing we did not have company that day & that it was just me & my 6 kids because we kept passing the bag one to the next saying you have got to smell this laundry powder it is yummy, & each one as they smelled it & looked like they had just been given a gift. Yes we all love mint! From my youngest to my teens they already were in love & we had not even ran the first batch of clothes. Seriously! If I could add a scratch & sniff sticker to this blog post I think all my mint loving fans would be smiling just like we were. So Warning if you love mint you might be inclined to just keep the bag at your desk for minty aroma alone.

Lets wash some clothes!

So to the washer we headed, we read the directions & added one scoop in with every dirty smelly towel we could find (It was not hard since we had just bathed the dog plus we had also cleaned up funky smelling water that came from the fridge, & even had to clean up some dog pee) into the washer went all the towels & the Molly’s Suds. We ran the load on cold water & patiently awaited (or impatiently depending on what kid you ask). The towels turned out amazingly fresh, no odors not even a minty odor for those concerned about the mint hanging around, they felt soft before even going into the dryer. So into the dryer they went & a short time later we pulled out fresh clean towels.

Mollys suds 2Now for another test, stains!

So I soaked some clothes that were stained & also spot treated some stains with molly’s suds, both ways worked well depending on the stain, of course soaking worked better for set in stains, & as a plus soaking in hot water scented the air peppermint 🙂

Other ways we have been using Molly’s Suds.

This Laundry powder fits well with my other products, I used it with my Laundry ball, I used it with one of my DIY laundry powders, & I used it with Borax. It also worked well with my natural DIY bleach alternative & DIY ideas for softeners. Every way I tried it I loved it. ❤

I also came up with using it to clean our tub that stains easily & to clean the toilet & it tacked both jobs amazingly well.
