DIY Shampoo/Conditioner recipe – NoPoo – No Poo – Homemade – Hair care

Are you ready for Ramblings & No Poo?

HairNo poo & you: Let me tell you about the wonders of going No Poo.
It means just what it sounds like, No it is not constipation it means  not using shampoo, conditioner or hair products, see there now you get it.
With no poo most start off just using baking soda water as shampoo & Apple cider vinegar as conditioner. I bet you are thinking of a volcano on your head about now & wondering if you will be walking around sounding like a salad right? well no worries & yes it does work & no your hair wont feel like lava either.
But as you will fast learn your hair starts detoxing from all the bad stuff in the shampoo & hair care products you have used & this can be a not fun or pretty process, (More info on the detox here). But once you get through the detox it can be so worth it. How long is said detox, well that depends on your hairs mood I guess, it seems to be different for everyone, 1 week to 2 months, yes I know that is a big ole gap.
My whole family loves these no poo recipes & my teens seem to be as addicted to no poo as I am 🙂
How: But what helps is to change-up what you are using for No Poo, one day wash with 1/4  tsp. hair2to 2 tsp. of baking soda in 6 to 8 oz of hot water applied to dry hair as shampoo, the next time you shampoo you could add 1/2 tsp of raw honey with the baking soda, next time you could add 1 tsp of Borax with the baking soda, or add 1/4 tsp epsom salt, find out what works best for you & change it up the way it works best for you.
Do the same with your conditioner, add 1 to 2 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar, citrus vinegar , or lemon juice to 6 oz hot water, next maybe combine the ACV & lemon juice, or use 1 tsp of epsom salt, you can also add 1/2 tsp of raw honey or ascorbic acid, or even DIY rosewater or Plantain water. (more shampoo ideas here)
baking sodaSome amazing things: We have noticed from going no poo, hair with more shine & body, less skin issues including dandruff, healthy looking scalp & hair, thinning hair got thicker, bald spot got some new growth, split ends rarely happen etc
My teen daughters have long hair & love it, they love no poo!
Just use baking soda as shampoo: You can always if you prefer just use baking soda water as shampoo for every washing & not switch around (& as body wash & hand soap to) add the 1/4 tsp. to 2 tsp. of baking soda to 6 or 8 ounces of hot water, stir till dissolved & apply to dry hair slowly working into scalp, allow to sit several minutes. If desired add 1/4 tsp of Epsom salt to 5 oz of hot water stir till dissolved & dump on ends of hair not scalp & work in (you can apply to scalp but this is just extra conditioning for ends) Follow with one of the above DIY conditioners or conditioner combos

DIY Shampoo & Conditionerconcentrated mixes
(this does not always work well for oily hair but could be adjusted by removing essential oils & epsom salt for oily hair or adjusting for your hair)
You need 2 one quart jars (mason jars, vinegar jars or other jar with sealing lid)
We use both these on all hair types & colors, teen tested & approved also You can adjust amounts to suit your hair type as well, play with the mixtures
Shampoo
heat 2 cup of Apple cider vinegar or water in a large enough pot to hold several cups.
Next stir in 4 tbsp borax into hot vinegar to dissolve
Now add 2 tbsp of baking soda very slowly to hot vinegar/borax (very, very slowly add while stirring to keep from fizzing over)
once cooled add to 1 qt jar, add 4 drops of essential oil (lemon, tea tree, lavender etc essential oil is optional)
Top off with water
add 1/4 to 1/2 a cup to 1 to 2 cups hot/warm water & slowly pour on wet or dry  hair working in just like shampoo, wait several minutes & rinse out as normal
Conditioner
To quart jar add approximately
1 cup of Apple cider vinegar, coconut water vinegar or citrus vinegar
1 cup of lemon juice (or 1/2 c lemon & 1/2 c lime juice)
1/8 cup 3% peroxide (for blonds, but I have been using on mine & my daughters dark hair with no color change)
add your fav scent of essential oil (5 to 15 drops optional)
Top of the rest of the bottle with more lemon juice or water
add 1/4 1/2 a cup to 1 to 2 cups hot/warm water & slowly pour on wet hair working in just like conditioner wait several minutes & rinse out as normal (or leave in if you desire)You should always first check by testing your skin as to rather you are sensitive or allergic before putting on your whole head
You can also make a clay powder hair mask

  1. Hello, I just tried (not this recipe) but a similar no poo recipe and by day 4 my hair was very greasy and oily. You mention that this transititon may take 1 week to 2 months, do you know exactly what is happening to my hair and have any encouragement for sticking it out? I am embaressed to go out in public, it is horrible right now!

  2. 4 days is far to soon for you to know what methods work best on your hair, keep rotating & changing it around to suit your hair, if hair is oily dont use essential oils as much or other oils, less epsom salt but maybe more baking soda & borax, try lemon juice as conditioner add the honey etc, only you can figure out the combos that work by trying them
And yes your hair still needs to detox so at day 4 that for sure would be happening.
If you can stick it out your hair & body will thank you
